Financial markets and the real economy

The value of bank deposits, bonds and shares in Germany is more than double the gross domestic product. The stock of derivative financial instruments is a multiple of this. The Asian crisis in 1997/98 and the subprime crisis in 2007/08 clearly demonstrate the influence of the financial markets on the real economy.

Contents

The financial markets specialisation deals with the economic aspects of financial markets, e.g. the role of financial transactions in establishing efficient risk allocation, the determination of prices on financial markets, the economic consequences of price fluctuations and the role of central banks in ensuring financial market stability.

Study objective

Students gain an in-depth insight into the functioning of capital markets and the methods used to empirically analyse price trends. Against this background, they will be able to independently categorise and assess current developments in financial markets and their possible effects on the real economy and evaluate the scope for shaping economic policy.
