Teaching degree in special education

The University of Regensburg has been offering special education teacher training programs since the winter semester 2021/22. The special education degree programme comprises 120 credit points (CP), which are studied in two subject areas. One specialisation comprises 90 CP, the second specialisation comprises 30 CP. The following specialisations are offered in Regensburg:

  • Pedagogy with a special educational focus on learning
  • Pedagogy for behavioural disorders
  • Pedagogy with mental disabilities

The possible combinations of special educational specialisations are regulated by the Teacher Examination Regulations(LPO I, §90 (external link, opens in a new window)). At the UR, it is possible to study Pedagogy for students with intellectual disabilities in combination with Pedagogy for students with behavioural disorders or Pedagogy with a special educational focus on learning.

Information on University Entrance Qualification, Application and Enrolment including deadlines and dates can be found at the Registrar 's Office (external link, opens in a new window).

  • Special needs education internship during the programme

Pedagogy for people with intellectual disabilities

The degree programme covers the content requirements of LPO I, integrates research-oriented and professional field-related courses in combination with school internships. After successfully completing the degree programme, students will be able to deal with special educational requirements and issues in a methodological, subject-specific and application-oriented manner. They have specialised knowledge and skills with regard to the application and implementation in concrete pedagogical situations, including practical teaching skills. They develop a sustainable pedagogical attitude and a value-based view of human nature.

Students on the Pedagogy with Intellectual Disabilities degree programme acquire a wide range of skills. Among other things

  • recognise the importance of theories and issues for working with people with intellectual disabilities
  • describe the needs of this group of people sensitively and precisely
  • deal with the phenomenon of severe intellectual disability in the context of education, upbringing and support
  • justify the educational mission against the background of the student body
  • reflect on ethical issues
  • learn how to write special educational assessments and deal with the topic of labelling
  • plan diagnosis-led support approaches
  • identify and answer scientific questions
  • and much more.

Although it is not an admission requirement, we recommend gaining practical experience in dealing with people with (intellectual) disabilities (for example in the form of internships, FSJ, Bufdi) in advance. Internships or work shadowing in a school context are recommended. The orientation internship (external link, opens in a new window) can be completed before starting the degree programme, at the latest during the first lecture-free period.

Notes on the extension subject 'special educational qualification'

According to § 92 (1) LPO I in conjunction with § 101 LPO I, students of all teacher training programs can additionally study a special education specialisation as an extension.
Students choose a special education specialisation here. Trainee teachers of special needs education choose a specialisation that is not already a compulsory part of the teaching degree in special needs education.
The LPO does not stipulate any compulsory coursework as part of the extension programme. Proof of a two-week block placement is a prerequisite for admission to the first state examination. In the first state examination, the extension programme is examined in line with the qualification programme (30 CP) of the respective subject area.
