Welcome to the GFD 2027 website!
In times of geopolitical challenges and increasing societal polarization, sustainability and democracy are emerging as increasingly important overarching over all didactic disciplines. Corresponding educational concepts, such as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Climate Change Education (CCE), and Global Learning, are increasingly being integrated in curricula, educational standards, and teacher-training documents across all three phases of teacher education. They are politically strengthened through recommendations and statements and, through approaches of civic education, are also regarded as a mandate for school development processes.
Despite the growing importance of cross-curricular tasks, they are not yet reflected in changes to school practices. On the contrary: it is precisely these cross-curricular tasks that challenge the subject-specific organization of schools and require project-based approaches to fundamentally rethink both schools and teaching. The conference aims to provide a space for discussing research findings and developing practical approaches to promoting sustainability and democracy in school education.
Under the title “A boost for sustainability and democracy? Perspectives from didactics on cross-curricular topics” we cordially invite you to the University of Regensburg campus from September 27 to 29, 2027.
We look forward to an inspiring academic exchange with you in Regensburg, as well as to a wide range of insights from subject-specific pedagogy and interdisciplinary dialogue during these challenging times.
The conference is being organized as a joint event by the Society for Subject-Specific Didactics (Gesellschaft für Fachdidaktik, GFD), the German-Speaking Network for Teacher Education for Sustainable Development (Lehrer*innenbildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung, LeNa), and the Expert Fora of Higher Education and School of the Germany’s National Platform for Education for Sustainable Development.
