Talking men - silent women?

A student project group analysed a total of six screenplays by three very well-known authors, namely Christopher Nolan, Sofia Coppola and Quentin Tarantino. The presentation showed one thing above all: only the scripts of the female director in this sample show a predominance of female dialogue. But not only that: the gender gap is also smaller for Sofia Coppola than for Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino. It is also interesting to note that not all of Nolan's characters can be read as either male or female. Since androids also appear, there is a not inconsiderable amount of dialogue from neutral characters.

Jackie Brown. A comprehensive study of independence and presence of the main female character in Quentin Tarantino's iconic film

In one study, a film by Quentin Tarantino was examined more closely. In terms of content, the focus was on the main character Jackie Brown. Methodologically, quantitative approaches were combined with qualitative ones. With the help of Python and Java, the speaking characters were identified and their share of the dialogue calculated. In addition, scene appearances were counted and the type of dialogue - e.g. in relation to the independence of the female character's argumentation - was examined in a close reading. Conclusion here: Jackie Brown is a very strong female character who is characterised by a high degree of independence
