Charlemagne as literary fiction. The narrative staging of late medieval historiography in Ulrich Fuetrer's 'Bavarian Chronicle'. Münster 2025 (= Regensburger Studien zur Literatur und Kultur des Mittelalters 7).
The study is dedicated to the image of Charlemagne that Ulrich Fuetrer creates in his 'Bavarian Chronicle' and uses this example to illuminate the dimensions of chronicle narration in the late Middle Ages. It examines Ulrich Fuetrer's historiographical style and the functionalisation of the Charlemagne narrative and compares the results with other historiographical and epic works of the late Middle Ages. The focus is on the question: How does Ulrich Fuetrer develop a narrative tradition around Charlemagne and how does it unfold its effect in late medieval Bavaria?

Doctoral project
Topic of the dissertation: Origin - Identity - Legitimacy. Narrative schemes in urban origin narratives of the late Middle Ages and the early modern period
The dissertation attempts to systematically analyse the hitherto little-noticed textual field of urban origin narratives in terms of (their) structure and (their) narrative style by combining approaches from German language and literature studies with those from history and cultural studies, and to examine the individual texts and their components in terms of their contribution to the construction of urban identity and - by extension - legitimacy.
