News: Artificial Intelligence in Law Studies and Legal Practice

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally transforming both legal practice and law education. Recent judgements highlight the breadth of legal issues, ranging from lawyers’ duty of care to judicial decision-making and administrative action. At the same time, the question arises for law students as to whether, and to what extent, the use of AI tools in coursework and seminar papers is permissible without breaching the principle of independent work. The article ‘Artificial Intelligence in Law Studies and Legal Practice’ (external link, opens in a new window) in the December issue of JURA brings these perspectives together, analyses the legal framework governing professional practice and examinations, develops guidelines and demonstrates how legal education can prepare future lawyers for the responsible use of AI in their future practice. Professor Hartmann co-authored the article with Professor Möslein from Marburg, who is also a co-editor of JURA.
