Funding for studies
As well as the usual questions that arise at the start of a degree course, the issue of how to fund it also frequently comes up.
Students have several options available to them in this regard.
How much does it cost to study at the University of Regensburg?
Are there tuition fees at the University of Regensburg?
First, the good news: at the University of Regensburg, there are generally no tuition fees or course fees. Anyone enrolled on a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme, or preparing for a state examination, does not pay any fees. (An exception applies to professional Master’s programmes (external link, opens in a new window), which usually incur a fee.)
So, as a rule, there are no tuition fees at the University of Regensburg! But of course, students still incur costs, whether for accommodation in Regensburg, everyday living expenses or study materials. On this website, you will find all the information you need on how to (partially) fund your student life.
How much is the term fee?
[Translate to English:] .
Studying is not entirely free of charge: each semester, students must pay a semester fee. For the winter semester of 2025, this fee totals 201.00 euros. This amount comprises 119.00 euros for the semester ticket (external link, opens (external link, opens in a new window) in a new window) (external link, opens in a new window) and 82.00 euros as the basic contribution to the Studentenwerk (external link, opens in a new window) (external link, opens in a new window). Students pay the semester fee upon enrolment and each semester as part of the re-registration process (external link, opens in a new window).
What other costs do students have to bear?
Students must expect to incur costs for rent, living expenses, telecoms providers, the broadcasting licence fee, etc.
Depending on the degree programme, there may also be costs for technical equipment (laptop, specialist software), books, lab coats or travel expenses for field trips.
How can students save money?
Many fees or membership charges are cheaper for students, so it’s often worth enquiring. In addition, the University of Regensburg itself offers a range of affordable services, such as university sports (external link, opens in a new window), the cafeterias and canteens (external link, opens in a new window) (external link, opens in a new window) run by the Student Services Organisation, software packages from the Computer Centre (external link, opens in a new window), and the University Library’s (external link, opens in a new window) textbook collection (external link, opens in a new window) (external link, opens in a new window).
Federal Training Assistance Act (BaföG)
The Federal Training Assistance Act, known as ‘Bafög’ for short, provides financial support for young women and men.
In principle, all students are entitled to educational support if they or their dependants are unable to cover the costs of their studies and living expenses themselves.
The funding is granted for the duration of the course, including periods when there are no lectures. The maximum duration of funding is laid down by regulation for each degree programme. Half of the funding is provided as a grant and the other half as an interest-free loan.

Scholarships offer a further source of funding.
These scholarships range from political and church foundations, trade unions and companies to private, local sponsors. Among the best known are the organisations for the promotion of gifted students.
The criteria for awarding scholarships vary depending on the foundation or organisation. However, the eligibility criteria are often based not only on academic performance but also on social commitment and many other factors.

Credits and loans
Another option is the special student loans offered by various financial institutions.
The maximum amounts and eligibility criteria vary considerably. What these loans and credits have in common is that they are paid out on a monthly basis.
The most important or best-known loans and credit facilities are:
KfW Student Loan
With the KfW Student Loan, the state-owned bank acts as the lender. Student services organisations or banks and building societies often act as distribution partners.
You can find your local contact at the Studentenwerk Niederbayern/Oberpfalz in the social counselling service.

Graduation Loan
The graduation loan from the Darlehenskasse der Bayerischen Studentenwerke is designed to offer students in financial need the opportunity to successfully complete their degree.
Applications for the loan can be made for the final four semesters of a degree programme. A personal guarantee covering the entire loan amount must be provided as security.
