On 11 June 2025, Prof. Paul Schwartz, a renowned US data protection lawyer from UC Berkeley, attended Prof. Kühling’s lecture on European law. Prof. Schwartz gave a lecture on the topic ‘DOGE and the End of Data Protection’.
He introduced the students to the US political and legal system and reported on current developments in the USA. He paid particular attention to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which was newly established following the last election, and its activities. The students gained fascinating insights into the agency’s controversial practices, which are not always entirely sound under data privacy law. Prof. Schwartz also spoke about campus life in California and addressed a range of questions in detail – from legal classifications to the resilience of American democracy.
