The tasks of the equal opportunities officers for science and art are regulated in the Bavarian Higher Education Act, Art. 4 (Equal Opportunities for Women and Men):
(1) In performing their duties, the universities shall promote the actual implementation of equal rights for women and men and take this into account as a guiding principle; they shall work towards the elimination of existing disadvantages. In order to implement equal rights for women and men, women shall be promoted, taking into account the priority of aptitude, ability and professional performance (Art. 33 para. 2 of the Basic Law). The aim of the promotion is to increase the proportion of women at all levels of science.
(2) Equal opportunities officers for science and art shall take care to avoid disadvantages for female academics, female teaching staff and students; they shall support the university in fulfilling its task in accordance with para. 1. Equal opportunities officers for science and art shall be selected by the senate for the university and by the faculty board for the faculty from among the full-time academic and artistic staff working at the university. Equal opportunities officers for science and art elected for the university belong to the Extended University Management and the Senate, and equal opportunities officers for science and art elected for the faculties belong to the Faculty Board and the appointment committees (Art. 18 para. 4 sentence 2 BayHSchPG) as voting members. In addition, the basic regulations regulate the participation of the equal opportunities officers for science and art in other committees; they may provide that deputy equal opportunities officers are appointed for equal opportunities officers for science and art.
