German Studies in the Master's Program

How is the Master's program structured?

The Master's program allows you to specialize in two of the following areas:

  • German Linguistics
  • Medieval German Literary Studies
  • Modern German Literary Studies
  • Teaching German Language and Literature

In each area you choose, you will complete two advanced modules (Advanced Module I and Advanced Module II), each of which consists of four assignments, an oral exam (30-45 min.) and a written exam (60-90 min.) which cover various sub-fields.
The advanced modules are complemented by:

  1. Another advanced module of your choice, in either a different Master's program for interdisciplinary exposure or in German Studies for a more in-depth approach.
  2. A project and practical component completed within the chosen area of specialization.

The exam regulations and the module catalog provide more details.
The planning guide for the Master's program provides a clear overview of the structure of your degree program.
