PhD Project

Unveiling the Unspoken: Queer Minorities (with)in Roman Society?

Gender constructs and gender roles are dependent on space, society and culture, and are subject to constant change. Non-binary individuals have been documented throughout almost all periods and regions of human history. At the same time, however, most of the definitions covered by the modern term LGBTQI* are difficult (or impossible?) to apply to social groups or individuals in Roman society due to the significant differences between the Roman and contemporary Western views of gender. In contrast, the term “queer”, which refers to gender or sexual deviance from a contemporary norm, could well be used for the scientific description of people who lived in the Roman Empire. In my PhD project, I examine whether various groups or individuals in Roman society can be described as queer in relation to Roman social gender concepts and norms, based on the cult of Attis.

A brief summary of the project is available on request.
