Program structure

Combinatorial degree programs: These programs combine either a bachelor's subject with a second major subject, or a bachelor's subject with two minor subjects.
You can choose (almost) all the subjects offered by the three philosophical faculties. In addition, second majors and minors can be chosen in business administration, economics, business information systems (only as a second major), and it may be possible to apply to take a second major or minor in further subjects.

Subject are put together in the following combinations:

either: 1 bachelor's subject (including the thesis) + 1 second major
or: 1 bachelor's subject (including the thesis) + 2 minor subjects

Description

The program imparts basic competencies in Italian literature, culture and linguistics as well as in-depth communicative competencies in the Italian language; it enables students to deal with transformation processes of linguistic, cultural and literary phenomena in the Italian-speaking cultural area as well as scientific work.
Focus on Italian Linguistics and/or Italian Literary Studies and/or Italian Cultural Studies (on two of three sub-subjects), depending on the student's choice.
In the course of their studies, students acquire expert language skills in Italian.
In the Bachelor's subject, various elective modules complement the course content and enable students to set their own personal focus.
Please note: Most courses are taught in German.

Professional prospects / competencies

Professional profile: cultural management, library and publishing, journalism/media, museums, adult education as well as other extracurricular forms of foreign language teaching, public relations, tourism, work in internationally operating companies and international institutions.
Competencies: in-depth knowledge of the Italian cultural area, written and oral communication skills, intercultural competencies

Disciplines involved

For Italian Philology as a major, two basic language practice modules must be completed in the first two years. Two of three basic modules in the subject areas of literature, linguistics and cultural studies must be chosen. In addition, individual credits (LP) from the third, non-chosen academic sub-subject should be obtained.

As a minor subject, one basic module in language practice and one basic module in subject-specific science must be completed in the basic studies, and additional credit points must be earned through freely chosen courses.

In the third year, the first major subject is continued with a language practice module and a subject-specific advanced module; the emphasis is set via elective credits.

Program duration / standard period of study

The length of the program depends on the progress of an individual's studies. The standard period of study, the time in which the intended program can be finished ideally is 6 semesters. The actual time taken to complete the program may vary. It is limited by the examination deadlines set out in the examination regulations.

180 ECTS credits overall;
comprising 90 ECTS credits in the bachelor's subject, 60 ECTS credits in the second subject and 30 ECTS credits in each minor subject

Language skills needed

The program does not require any knowledge of Italian; knowledge can be acquired during the course of the first two semesters. A placement test (Italian) is offered (see above).
The compulsory courses start at the B2 CEFR level.
Italian language skills at the end of the program correspond to CEFR C1.2
