The aim of our research is to work with colleagues in clinical practice to elucidate the pathogenesis of monogenic diseases in order to gain insights into the relevance of the affected gene for cell biology and organ function and, ideally, to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
Kidney research is embedded in the cooperation network of the Collaborative Research Center/Transregio 374 (external link, opens in a new window), which deals with two compartments in the kidney, the tubule system and the interstitium. The tubule system and interstitium of the kidney are not only the site of interactions that play a role in adaptation processes, but also of many disease processes that can lead to excessive scarring and the need for dialysis. Research into the largely unknown interactions and mechanisms of disease processes should lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies.
Other research projects are dedicated to the adrenal gland, an important hormone-producing organ. Here, we are investigating the salt dependence of aldosterone production and the mechanisms underlying the development of benign hormone-producing tumors.
