B.A. British Studies
Overview
“British Studies” comprises the literatures and cultures of Great Britain and Ireland (including Postcolonial Studies). The programme is part of the combinatory Bachelor of Arts (6 semesters, 180 ECTS) and can be studied as the First Major Subject (90 ETCS + the B.A. thesis, 10 ECTS), as the Second Major Subject (60 ECTS) or as a Minor Subject (30 ECTS).

Objectives
First Major Subject (B.A.-Fach)
Graduates have a sound knowledge of the cultures, literatures and history of Great Britain and Ireland. they have in-depth content-related and theoretical knowledge and methodological skills in selected areas of English/ British Studies (including Postcolonial Studies) in their entire historical scope, cultural diversity and medial and material variety. They are able to apply this knowledge to the analysis and interpretation of different forms of cultural expression and their cultural and historical contexts. In particular, they are able to work on a more extensive topic of British literature and/ or cultural studies as part of their B.A. thesis and present it adequately in English.
Graduates possess active and passive language skills at level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and are proficient in techniques of oral and written presentation in English.
Second Major Subject
Graduates have a basic knowledge of the cultures, literatures and history of Great Britain and Ireland. They are able to apply cultural studies theories and methods to the analysis of various types of texts, materials and media, and have content-related and theoretical knowledge as well as sound methodological skills in key areas of English/ British Studies (including Postcolonial Studies).
Graduates have active and passive language skills at level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and are familiar with techniques of oral and written presentation in English.
Minor Subject
Graduates have an overview of the cultures, literatures and history of Great Britain. They are able to apply theories and methods of literary and cultural studies to the analysis and interpretation of different types of texts, materials and media, and they have English language skills at level C1 (receptive) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Which courses am I supposed to take?

Key Facts
Your B.A. thesis should demonstrate that you have understood the basics of academic work in your subject area and can apply them independently to a particular topic. The topic must be discussed with your supervisor.
Once you have registered your B.A. thesis at the Examination Office (Prüfungsamt), you will have two months to work on your topic. The Examination Office will send you a letter with the precise dates and deadlines.

When and how to register your B.A. Thesis
You can register your B.A. thesis at the Examination Office at any time (no exact dates) as long as you have at least 150 CP from completed modules.
