Focus of teaching

The specification of the position of senior lecturer ("for special teaching tasks") results in a correspondingly broad teaching profile. However, in addition to the compulsory programmes specific to the degree course, individual key topics are also to be covered, which have otherwise had a shadowy existence in the teaching programme to date. The individual thematic blocks will vary from semester to semester and thus illuminate each specialisation from a different perspective. Students are thus given the opportunity to specialise in a regional issue. In detail, the course programme reads as follows.

  1. Comparison of Western political systems
  2. The political system of Germany
  3. The political systems of Latin America
  4. The political systems of Africa
  5. Political extremism
  6. System transformation

The first category includes Germany, the EU and the political systems of France, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the USA. The aim is therefore to cover the spectrum of Western governmental systems not just selectively, but as broadly as possible. In addition, political systems in Latin America and Africa inspired by the West are also to be analysed. The aim is not only to categorise the case studies, but also to place local African and Latin American problems in an overarching, supra-regional context.

The thematic focal points are made up of three subgroups:

1. The functional logic of national and supranational political systems

  • Authoritarian and totalitarian dictatorships
  • Parliamentary, presidential and "semi-presidential" democracies
  • Competitive and consociational democracy
  • Political regionalisation and federalism
  • Theory and practice of European integration

2. Political actors and decision-making

  • Political extremism (parties, movements)
  • Terrorism in synchronous and diachronic comparison
  • Direct democracy and representation
  • Parties and party systems
  • Mediation of interests
  • The military

3. Political attitudes and policy content

  • Political culture
  • Policy areas and responsibilities in the area of conflict between the EU and member states
  • Selected policy fields

The range of courses is geared towards the B.A. programme as well as the Master's degree programme in democracy studies and the social studies subject in the teacher training programs, but is also open to students of other degree programmes and subjects (freely combinable Minor Subjects, east-west studies, etc.). Please refer to the comments on the individual courses for details (group of participants, content, performance requirements).

Research focus

Research

My primary research interest lies in the field of extremism research, in particular terrorism research. Based on the analysis of a social revolutionary terrorist organisation as part of my dissertation, the following analyses focused on the extent to which the uniformity of the development of terrorist organisations to date can be used to predict similar future developments. An anthology on social revolutionary terrorism and numerous essay projects were the result of this research activity.
In addition, the conception of a textbook on the introduction to scientific working techniques (together with a collective of authors) and a textbook on the associational landscape of the Federal Republic of Germany (together with Prof. Dr Sebaldt) have been the focus of my academic work to date.
An anthology on the classics of association theory was subsequently published together with Prof Martin Sebaldt.
In 2011, an edited volume on the topic of "Insurrection and Democracy" was published together with Prof Sebaldt, and my habilitation thesis was completed in winter 2013.
In the years that followed, in addition to numerous lecture tours, I also devoted myself to various essay publications (left-wing and right-wing terrorism in Germany, the anomic potential of the military in Latin America), but also to researching the motives of Western jihadists, in order to return to terrorism research.
