Information on starting your studies

On this page, we have summarised important information to help you get off to a successful start with your degree programme. This page is regularly updated and expanded.

In addition to the subject-specific information on this page, please also take note of the programme-wide information on starting your degree, the Introductory Events for new Students on offer, and the information provided by the Maths/Physics Student Council.

For the Bachelor’s degree programme in Physics, the following modules are recommended for the first semester:

Note: Linear Algebra I (external link, opens in a new window) may be taken as an alternative to the Mathematical Methods course. Students may optionally take a supplementary subject as early as the first semester.

For the Gymnasium Teacher Training programme specialising in Physics, the following modules are recommended in the first semester:

For teacher training programmes with physics as a teaching subject, the following course is recommended in the first semester:

For teacher training programmes specialising in Science, Technology and Mathematics (NWT) didactics , the following course is recommended in the first two semesters:

Please note: Places on NWT courses are limited. Any remaining places will be allocated by lottery during the first seminar session.

General information:

Most of the courses listed consist of a lecture and small-group tutorials, which are offered at various times that you can choose individually. The tutorials usually do not start until the second week of lectures.

The course catalogue (external link, opens in a new window) is the central point of reference for all courses. You must register here, if necessary, stating your preferences for different timetables.

Dates:

  • From 15 to 18 September, daily from 9:00 to 17:00, a preparatory mathematics course will take place in Lecture Hall H33.
  • From 21 September to 2 October, daily from 9:30 to 16:30, a bridging course in mathematics will take place for first-year students on the mathematics, physics and computer science programmes at the Faculty of Mathematics.
  • On 5 and 6 October, the Central Student Advisory Service will be offering a comprehensive introduction to all teacher training programmes.
  • From 5 to 7 and 7 to 9 October, a first-semester event organised by the Maths/Physics Students’ Association will take place in Karlstein.
  • On 12 October at 13:00, the central introductory session for all degree programmes in the Faculty of Physics will take place in Lecture Hall H36. Please note that some lectures may already take place before the central introductory session.
  • On 14 October at 13:30, a compulsory introductory session for the first-year practicals will take place in Lecture Hall H36.
  • During the first week of the lecture term, a block session to refresh basic mathematical skills will take place as part of the Mathematical Methods course. Please note that these sessions are in addition to the regular Mathematical Methods sessions.
