Tenure-Track at the University of Regensburg
Tenure-Track
The tenure-track model at the University of Regensburg offers academics attractive career prospects in an early career phase. The tenure-track-professorship is initially limited in time and, after a successful evaluation process, becomes a lifetime professorship.
There are three models at the University of Regensburg:
- W1 with tenure track to W2
- W1 with tenure track to W3
- W2 with tenure track to W3
Clearly defined target criteria based on the university-wide catalogue of criteria, which are determined during the appointment process together with the faculty and the applicant - individually and according to the subject - ensure transparency in the evaluation.
Tenure-track statutes and legal basis
The structure of a tenure-track professorship is defined in the tenure-track statutes of 28 May 2025.
General information on appointment procedures at the University of Regensburg can be found in the guidelines for conducting an appointment procedure.
Further information on recruitment requirements can be found in the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (BayHIG).

General conditions for tenure-track professorships
Equipment
Tenure-track professors carry out their research and teaching duties independently and receive appropriate resources. This ensures a high degree of independence.
Reduction of the teaching load
W1 junior professors have a teaching obligation of 5 teaching hours in the first three years and 7 teaching hours in the following three years. For holders of W2 development professorships, a reduction in the teaching load is also possible upon application.
Extension years
In order to improve the compatibility of family and career, up to two additional years can be applied for in the case of childcare or caring for relatives.
Mentoring
Every TT professor can request the support of a professor from their own faculty as a contact person for developing their academic profile. The mentor's task is to provide professional advice, encouragement and support. In contrast to external coaching, TT professors receive experienced internal contact persons who provide targeted professional feedback on an equal footing.
Tenure@UR programme
A target group-specific support programme "Tenure@UR" is offered for all tenure-track professors. It is tailored to the needs of TT professors and can be taken according to individual requirements.
Tenure@UR includes:
- Networking activities that enable the exchange of experiences between colleagues
- Workshops for interdisciplinary further qualification,
- individual coaching, especially at the beginning of the tenure phase.
To the current Tenure@UR programmes
In addition to this offer, which is reserved for TT professors, the offers of the Centre for University and Academic Teaching - CUAT, the Center for Language and Communication (external link, opens in a new window) and other central institutions (external link, opens in a new window) can be used.
