What is a doctorate?
The term "doctorate" refers to the acquisition of a doctoral degree on the basis of independent and in-depth research at a high academic level.
At the University of Regensburg, the doctorate comprises the following central elements:
- the qualification achievements regulated in the doctoral regulations of the faculties, curricula of the Research Training Groups or supervision agreements,
- an independent academic work (dissertation),
- an oral examination and
- the publication of the dissertation.
The details of the doctoral procedure are set out in the framework doctoral regulations and the doctoral regulations of the faculties.
The faculty administrations are responsible for handling the doctoral procedures.

FAQ about the promotion
Where can I find the doctoral regulations?
All doctoral regulations can be found in the section University → Organisation → Legal bases & documents. Please note both the framework doctoral degree regulations and the regulations of your faculty.
How do I find supervisors for my doctoral project?
Requirements for a doctorate are that you have successfully completed a degree programme. The next and most important step on the path to a doctorate is to find professors who can supervise you in your research project. We recommend that you use the faculties' websites as a starting point for your research. There you can find out what research areas the university focuses on and who is doing it.
Research specialisations at the faculties of the UR
If you have found a professor in your research area, please contact him or her directly and introduce yourself with meaningful documents (CV, university certificates, transcripts, list of your publications, brief description of your research project). It is crucial that your qualifications and your interest in a doctoral project in the relevant field are specifically expressed.
What is a structured doctoral programme?
At the University of Regensburg, individual doctorates and doctorates in structured programmes are possible - depending on the subject.
The doctoral programmes are structured very differently. In addition to your research work in the respective subject area, they offer you a subject-specific qualification programme, for example on research methods or key skills, and the opportunity to exchange ideas with other doctoral candidates on the programme. You can find more information about the respective offers on the pages of the individual programmes.

Do I have to enrol in order to do a doctorate?
You can enrol on a doctoral degree programme and thus obtain student status. However, enrolment is not mandatory: you can also do a doctorate without enrolment.
Requirements for enrolment are that you register for doctoral studies at your faculty and thus apply for acceptance for doctoral studies at the University of Regensburg. To enrol, you will need confirmation of your successful acceptance for doctoral studies. Your contacts for this process are the faculty administrations.
