Degree programs in the humanities leading to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) often involve a combination of several subjects in which various academic skills are acquired.

The following combinations are possible:

  • Bachelor's subject with a second major subject or
  • Bachelor's subject with two Minor Subjects.


The aim of the Bachelor's degree programme in German language and literature is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the language, culture and literature of the German-speaking cultural area, whereby contemporary issues are discussed alongside linguistic and literary history developments.

  1. Students are able to apply and critically reflect on specialised methods of linguistics, literature and cultural studies to narrowly defined research questions.
  2. In the course of their studies, they learn to analyse linguistic phenomena in a scientifically sound manner, to apply methods of literary analysis and/or to evaluate developments within German language and literature studies in a methodologically sound manner.

Graduates of the B.A. German language and literature programme are

  • as employees in publishing houses and media organisations,
  • in public relations or
  • in cultural institutions such as libraries, museums and archives, in theatre, film and documentation (copywriters, dramaturges) or in educational institutions.

The fields of

  • Information or event management,
  • PR,
  • Advertising,
  • Corporate communications

have also opened up to German language and literature graduates.

The language, communication and information literacy skills from the degree programme can also be used as key qualifications in areas that are not immediately related to German language and literature studies. This includes

  • Areas of public Administration or
  • consulting firms and companies organised in the private sector.

Structure of the Program

Program Structure

On the combined Bachelor's degree programme in Humanities (B.A.), you will study two or three subjects at the same time. The degree program can be combined from a wide range of subjects. You can either choose a second major subject (60 ECTS) or two Minor Subjects (30 ECTS each) in addition to the Bachelor's subject (90 ECTS).

The degree programme also includes a final thesis (10 ECTS) and a free elective courses in (20 ECTS). The total workload corresponds to that of a single-subject degree program.

Voluntary internships often complement the degree programme in order to explore different professional fields as well as to acquire practical skills and apply theoretical knowledge.

Internship

Internships are not compulsory in the B.A. German language and literature programme. However, it is possible to have internships credited in the area of pre-vocational qualification (German language and literature as a Bachelor's subject). Internationalization

German language and literature is part of the Erasmus+ exchange programme and offers the opportunity to spend a semester abroad at various European universities. Further information can be found on the website of the Institute of German Language and Literature.
