The Bachelor's degree program with Italian language and literature as a sub-subject is a professionally qualifying, undergraduate degree program with a Standard Period of Study of six semesters.

On this degree program, you can specialise in different areas depending on the profile you wish to pursue. You have three options to choose from:

  • Bachelor's subject + major subject
  • Bachelor Subject + Minor Subject + Minor Subject
  • Bachelor's subject + minor subject + freely combinable minor subject (2x)

By studying Italian language and literature, you will acquire a comprehensive understanding of the language, culture and literature of the Italian cultural area. In addition to historical developments, current topics take centre stage.

During the course of your degree programme, you will choose two of the three subject areas:

  • Linguistics
  • Literary studies
  • Cultural studies

You will also acquire sound language skills: italian up to level C1.2 - an excellent basis for your career and international communication.

By the way: you can combine Italian with Spanish and French as part of your Bachelor's degree programme and thus expand your profile.

In six semesters, you will acquire a sound knowledge of linguistics, literature and cultural studies and excellent language skills up to level C1.2.

Structure of the Program

Program Structure

On the combined Bachelor's degree programme in Italian language and literature (B.A.) in the humanities, you will study two or three subjects at the same time. The degree program can be combined from a wide range of subjects. You can either choose a second major subject (60 ECTS credits) or two Minor Subjects (30 ECTS credits each) in addition to the Bachelor's subject (90 ECTS credits).

The degree programme also includes a final thesis (10 ECTS) and a free elective courses in (20 ECTS). The total workload corresponds to that of a single-subject degree program.

Voluntary internships often complement the degree programme in order to explore different professional fields as well as to acquire practical skills and apply theoretical knowledge.

Placement Test

The Institute of Romance Languages and Literature offers a Placement Test for all first-year students. This Placement Test serves to check your existing language skills and to ensure that you are placed in suitable language courses. It is therefore in your own interest to take the Placement Test.

Subject-Specific Language Requirements

The compulsory courses start at level B2 CEFR. If you do not have the required language skills, you can attend ZSK courses, for example.
