Course: Latin - Teaching degree grammar school
- Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
The Bavarian teacher training programme is divided into an academic course of study at the university, which ends with the first state examination, and a two-year traineeship, which concludes with the second state examination. The university degree programme for a teaching degree at grammar schools consists of
- two teaching subjects
- the education programme and
- the Internships.
The philological and literary studies programme focuses on the Latin language and literature from its beginnings to late antiquity and even up to the present day (Modern Latin). The focus is on the period from the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD, which is understood as 'classical' in the broader sense. By attending courses in neighbouring disciplines, the culture of Greco-Roman antiquity as a whole is included (Greek language and literature/classical philology, classical archeology, ancient history, possibly also philosophy, theology and reception in literature and art).
On the one hand, students acquire the linguistic skills to translate from and into Latin and thus acquire active, independently usable language skills as an indispensable requirement for their later professional work in secondary school teaching. They also gain a basic overview of the history of Latin literature and become familiar with its essential texts, traditions and motifs, as well as its social and cultural background. The course teaches content-related and methodological and academic skills as well as the ability to work independently with ancient or antiquity-oriented literature by translating and interpreting, comparing and making judgements. Subject-specific didactic events prepare students for their future teaching practice.

In the subject of Latin, students are expected above all to enjoy a thorough examination of texts and a genuine interest in Roman culture and its continuing influence. The willingness and ability to teach and an inner vocation to teaching are taken for granted.
What can I do with this degree?
The typical career goal is to work as a grammar school teacher specialising in Latin. Requirements include passing the 1st State Examination at the University of Regensburg and a two-year traineeship with an equally successful 2nd State Examination.
In addition to this, there are a number of career opportunities in specialised fields, e.g. in publishing houses, archives, libraries and research institutions, as well as in the broad field of journalistic, feuilletonistic, cultural and political activities. In addition to the specialist skills acquired during their studies and the timeless relevance of ancient literature (e.g. Cicero's theory of the state in relation to contemporary politics, Seneca's fundamental philosophical issues in theology and modern psychology), it is also essential to acquire and train key qualifications such as the ability to think logically and make one's own judgements, to grasp and process complex contexts. If you are aiming for a career outside of school, you should make contact with your future professional environment at an early stage.
After successful completion of the university degree programme with the 1st State Examination, it is possible to continue at the University of Regensburg on the doctoral degree programme to obtain the title of Dr. phil.

Admission to the 1st State Examination also requires proof of knowledge of Greek; however, this qualification does not have to be available at the beginning of the degree programme.
