Key Areas of Research
Research is conducted on a wide range of topics at the Faculty of Catholic Theology. Further information can be found on the individual department pages. However, the Faculty has established one interdisciplinary research focus:

  • The Bible and its Reception in Cultural Discourses
This research focus primarily examines questions of hermeneutics and the reception of the Christian Holy Scriptures in a variety of contexts. [more]

Third-party funded projects

In recent years, researchers at the Faculty have secured more than five million euros in third-party funding:

International research colloquia
International research colloquia are held regularly at the Faculty. The conference ‘Faith and Reason’, which examined the requirements, implications and consequences of Pope Benedict XVI’s ‘Regensburg Lecture’, met with a wide response.

Visiting researchers
The Faculty regularly hosts renowned scholars who spend an extended period in Regensburg conducting their research and enriching academic life at the Faculty through colloquia and seminars. These visits are funded, amongst other sources, by programmes run by the Humboldt Foundation, the DAAD, the DFG and the Hans Vielberth University Foundation in Regensburg. Since 2012, the ‘Pope Benedict XVI/Joseph Ratzinger Visiting Professorship’ [URL (external link, opens in a new window)] has been awarded annually with the support of the Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI Foundation.

Short-term visits by visiting academics, who present their research findings in lectures, colloquia and seminars, also serve to foster links with national and international research.

Support for early-career researchers
In addition to externally funded projects, academic qualification theses are key instruments for supporting young academics:

Publications
In addition to numerous individual publications (see the department pages), significant research findings are also made available to the academic community through the book series ‘Regensburger Studien zur theology’, published by Peter Lang.
