Move & Connect

Loneliness is no longer merely a marginal issue affecting individuals – it represents a societal challenge that touches on numerous areas of life, from mental health to social participation. Particularly in cities such as Regensburg, which are characterised by a high proportion of single-person households and a diverse, international population, it is important to find new ways of bringing people into contact with one another. This is precisely where‘FIVE – Fit and Connected Against Loneliness’ (external link, opens in a new window)comes in, with six sub-projects being funded across Germany. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, and implemented by the German Olympic Sports Confederation.

The sub-project “Move & Connect” brings people in Regensburg together across generations and cultures through sport and exercise. In cooperation with the University of Regensburg’s Sports Centre, the association CampusAsyl e.V. and the City of Regensburg, the project specifically targets groups particularly affected by loneliness, including (international) students, refugees, people with a migrant background and older citizens. Through low-threshold exercise programmes, innovative social interaction formats (“Sport + X”) and a strong network (“MiteinandeR”), sustainable structures for participation and social networking are being created. The project builds on existing resources from university sports, sports clubs and CampusAsyl e.V., and relies on broad cooperation and creative formats to strengthen social cohesion within the city’s community.
