“Beyond Canon_” Research Colloquium: this week's guest will be Benjamin de Vos, presenting his studies on “Staging Philosophical Drama and Orchestrating Truth in the Clementine Tradition” at the Centre's seminar room in 3.14.
Abstract:
This presentation examines the (ambiguous) depiction of the apostle Peter’s confrontationswith Simon Magus in the fourth-century Pseudo-Clementines, reframing them not as miracle contests, but as rhetorical and philosophical debates staged in the public sphere for epistemic authority. In this context, public space emerges as a performativearena where truth is not simply declared but enacted, negotiated, and strategically controlled.
