As part of Prof. Dr Kühling’s seminar on the law of the information society, a field trip to Amazon’s Munich office took place on 27 November 2025. At the digital company’s newly opened offices, the group of interested students was welcomed by Legal Director Sabine Meinecke. She provided an overview of the group’s various business areas.
Following this, the 27 participants gained insights into key legal issues across various business areas through a series of specialist presentations. Particular focus was placed on the entertainment division: representatives from Amazon Music, Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios presented their work and illustrated it using practical case studies. For example, legal issues relating to TV series production – from the acquisition of rights and the drafting of contracts with creative professionals to the distribution of content on the platform – were explained. In addition, the regulatory requirements for streaming platforms were discussed, such as guidelines on the protection of minors and local content quotas.
Furthermore, the students gained an insight into Amazon’s litigation department. Using examples of specific cases, it was made clear what kinds of disputes a globally operating digital company faces.
During lunch and coffee breaks, there was an opportunity for personal discussion with the in-house lawyers. The students were able to ask questions about career paths, the role of a corporate counsel and day-to-day working life in an international digital company. The excursion thus not only provided a practical complement to the topics covered in the specialisation programme, but also offered valuable insights into potential career prospects at the interface between law and the digital economy.
