About Prof. Bienert:

Prof. Dr. Sven Bienert MRICS REV began his career with vocational training as a banker. He then qualified as a real estate specialist (Immobilienwirt, Diplom-VWA) and, three years later, completed a degree in business administration (Diplom-Kaufmann) at the University of Lüneburg. He earned his doctorate at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg under Prof. Francke, with a dissertation on the impact of bank capital requirements on project finance in the real estate sector. Over many years, Prof. Bienert held senior management positions at international consulting firms and companies in the finance and real estate industries.

Since April 2010, he has headed the Centre of Competence for Sustainability in Real Estate at the IRE|BS Institute of Real Estate at the University of Regensburg. From 2011 to 2013, he also served as CEO of Probus Real Estate GmbH in Vienna, which managed assets of around €2.1 billion. From 2013 until summer 2019, he was Managing Director of the IRE|BS Institute of Real Estate. From 2015 to the end of 2024, he also led the research project “Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor” (CRREM), funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme. The project developed science-based decarbonisation pathways for the real estate sector, enabling the greenhouse gas emissions of buildings to be measured and property portfolios to be aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement in order to avoid so-called “stranded assets”. The resulting standard is now internationally recognised and used by numerous market participants worldwide. He has edited and authored numerous books on real estate and has received many research awards. In 2022, his academic work was recognised with the Richard Ratcliff Award at the ARES conference.

Prof. Bienert also works as an expert appraiser and consultant. He serves on the boards and committees of numerous industry associations, including the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), the German Property Federation (ZIA), the Austrian Association of Real Estate Experts (ARE), the Association for the Promotion of Quality in the Real Estate Industry (ImmQu), the Institute for Corporate Governance in the German Real Estate Industry (ICG), and the German Association for Financial Analysis and Asset Management (DVFA). Since 2019, he has led Subproject 5 of the DFG research group on the transformation of sacred spaces, “TRANSARA”. Since 2022, he has also been a member of the European Valuation Standards Board of The European Group of Valuers’ Associations (TEGOVA) and of the Expert Advisory Group of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Prof. Bienert was a member of the Supervisory Board of CA Immobilien Anlagen AG from December 2016 to November 2018, and of Immofinanz AG from May 2019 to March 2022. He has served on the Supervisory Board of ZIMA Holding AG since June 2015 and on the Advisory Board of RATISBONA Holding GmbH & Co. KG since March 2022.
