Research

The chairs and professorships at the Institute of Real Estate Economics wish their academic research to be regarded as a platform for theory-driven and application-oriented research. Only in this way will the interplay between theory and practice take on great significance. The aim is to equip our students, as well as interested third parties, with the skills needed to tackle real-world problems in the real estate sector.

The research priorities at the Centre of Competence for Sustainability in the Real Estate Industry are organised as follows:

Research contributions

Identifying and Understanding

  • Scenario development for ‘downscaling’ global change processes for the real estate sector:
    • Data processing and modelling/tools
    • Identification of impact chains
    • Risk identification (and assessment)
    • Analysis of potential cumulative damage
    • Complex systems and intrinsic uncertainty
  • Sustainability due diligence
  • Research into urban/cross-city hedonic ‘quality of life’ (QOL), in particular the implicit pricing of environmental aspects (environmental attributes, environmental determinants) and hedonic pricing models
  • Analysis of user satisfaction and needs
  • Analysis of aspects of market failure
  • Intertemporal issues/ethics/intergenerational challenges of climate change

Changing and Innovating

  • Resource management (in the scientific sense) and the real estate sector – an outline of an ecologically sustainable real estate sector
  • Communication/dissemination of environmentally relevant findings/insights
  • Optimising the sustainability of real estate investments:
    • Creation/standardisation/further development of assessment standards
    • End-use/least-cost considerations
    • Development of tailored financing instruments
    • Further development of green leases
  • Green development/green building/brownfield sites/plus buildings/bionic buildings
  • Business strategies in the field of climate change adaptation
  • Sustainable management and maintenance of the real estate portfolio/implementation of bionic principles in the real estate sector
