On Saturday, the International Office’s Welcome Center organized its popular boat trip to Walhalla. Our group of international researchers and their companions enjoyed a scenic boat ride along the Danube to Walhalla. During the trip, we learned interesting facts about the landmarks along the river.
Among other things, we discovered that the gorge near Tegernheim marks the meeting point of two ancient mountain ranges: the Jurassic Mountains in the west and the much older granite mountains of the Bavarian Forest in the east. We also learned about King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who commissioned Walhalla, and its architect, Leo von Klenze.
Thanks to the fantastic weather, everyone was able to enjoy the sunshine on deck. Walhalla was the highlight of the day, with its impressive neoclassical architecture rising high above the Danube and creating a truly magical view.
After arriving, the group had around two hours to explore the monument, take in the scenery, and enjoy refreshments at the small café before returning to Regensburg by boat.
