About

Pia Singmann is a doctoral candidate in American Studies.

She has a Bachelor and Master of Arts in American Literary and Cultural Studies as well as Comparative Literature from Ruhr University Bochum. In her Master thesis she analyzed a selection of Samuel R. Delany's work as an example for the instrumentalization of paratexts to establish a literary space to construct Critical Theory via fiction and, in turn, to deliberately (re)intellectualize speculative fiction.

Research

Her dissertation project is primarily concerned with speculative fiction’s negotiation of high literaricity, the fluctuating value perception of non-realism and the literary, as well as material infrastructure (a.o. the paratext) that enables this dynamic. With a temporal focus on American science fiction from the 1960s through to the late 1980s, the project aims to outline how these texts renegotiate their position within the larger literary infrastructure, hierarchal value system, and genre dynamic through various practices.
