South East European Studies is a Bachelor's degree programme that combines history, linguistics and social anthropology on the countries of South East Europe. In addition to imparting knowledge of the history and culture of Southeast Europe, the degree program also offers a sound education in one of the region's languages.

The interdisciplinary degree program Southeast European Studies (B.A.) provides students with in-depth knowledge of the history, politics, society and cultures of Southeast Europe. Students acquire language skills and learn to critically analyse historical and current developments.

The degree program offers a high degree of flexibility. As part of the combinatorial Bachelor's degree programme, it enables a wide range of subject combinations and individual specialisations. A free elective courses in (20 ECTS) offers additional opportunities for specialisation or language training.

The degree program is characterised by its interdisciplinarity, the combination of regional and language studies and the close cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for East and South East European Studies (IOS).

Students benefit from a high proportion of courses taught in English, international guest lecturers and the opportunity to spend a semester abroad at partner universities in south east Europe.

In addition, the programme regularly offers excursions to countries in south-eastern and east europe, which enable direct exchange with the region - most recently to Moldova, Serbia or Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Graduates work in the fields of science and research, international organisations, media, cultural management, diplomacy or non-governmental organisations. The degree program is also an ideal preparation for further Master's programmes with a regional or social science focus.

Structure of the Program

The Bachelor's degree programme in Southeast European Studies (B.A.) has a modular structure and is based on interdisciplinary cooperation between history, social anthropology, linguistics, literature and language training.
The degree program is divided into two consecutive phases and combines basic and in-depth modules with linguistic and methodological training.

Program Structure

The three-year Bachelor's degree programme consists of a foundation phase and a postgraduate phase.
In the foundation phase, students acquire basic knowledge of the approaches, methods and theories of Southeast European Studies. This includes introductions to the history, social anthropology and linguistics and cultural studies of Southeast Europe, supplemented by the teaching of academic working techniques and the beginning of language training in a Southeast European language.

In the postgraduate phase, knowledge of Southeast Europe is deepened and expanded. Special emphasis is placed on the students' independent project work, further language training and the application of the acquired knowledge in the context of a compulsory Internship and the bachelor's thesis.
The degree program is part of the combinatorial Bachelor's degree programme of the Faculties of Arts and Humanities and can be studied as a Bachelor's subject (90 ECTS), Second Major (60 ECTS) or Minor Subject (30 ECTS).

Study Plan

The recommended Study Plan provides for an even distribution of modules over six semesters. Students can set individual priorities, in particular by choosing language modules, thematic specialisations and supplementary courses from neighbouring disciplines.

The Module Overview includes modules from the fields of South East European history, social and cultural studies, language practice of a South East European language, methods of history and social sciences as well as interdisciplinary elective modules.

Timetable

The specific Timetable is published each semester and can be viewed in the course catalogues of the University of Regensburg. The courses take place mainly in presence.

Internship

A compulsory full-time internship (four weeks) is an integral part of the Bachelor's degree programme. It can be completed in Germany or abroad and enables practical experience, for example in cultural institutions, media, NGOs, international organisations or research institutes.

Internationalization

The degree program has a strong international focus. It offers courses taught in English, international guest lecturers and the opportunity to spend a semester abroad at partner universities in South East and East Europe.

In addition, excursions to the region promote direct dialogue with local players and institutions.

Subject-Specific Language Requirements

No prior knowledge of Southeast European languages is required for admission to the degree programme.

Language training (e.g. Bosnian/Croatian/serbian, Romanian or Albanian) is an integral part of the programme and begins at beginner level.

Knowledge of English is helpful for individual courses, but is not a formal requirement.

Admission for internationals

Students with a foreign university entrance qualification must provide sufficient proof of German language skills in accordance with the requirements of the University of Regensburg.
