Course: Data Science B.Sc.
- Informatics and Data Science
The Data Science degree programme at the University of Regensburg is based on several pillars:
We provide you with exactly the mathematics, statistics and computer scientists you need to become a successful data scientist. Based on this solid foundation, you can flexibly organise the rest of your studies. Our wide range of constrained elective courses allows you to apply the tools you have learnt in a wide variety of subject areas. Whether it's tumour research or quantum chemistry, fake news detection or IT security - there's hardly a wish left unfulfilled. In addition, you can deepen your tool knowledge individually in the elective courses in and even choose courses from the entire range of courses offered by the University of Regensburg, e.g. to further develop your skills in rhetoric or project management.

Program Profile
Is this the right program for me?
Yes, if you have the following:
- A passion for topics related to data and artificial intelligence
- Mathematical talent and a spirit of research
- You will be taught the necessary mathematics and mathematicians skills during your studies
What can I do with this degree?
Data science and artificial intelligence are increasingly changing our lives and our habits. Data science is therefore one of the central fields of work of the future. Data scientists are already being recruited in large numbers: by companies, research institutions and government agencies, both nationally and internationally - and in almost all sectors. You can work there as a data engineer, data steward or data analyst, for example.
Data scientists develop specialised AI applications. They manage and analyse data streams in order to answer questions that could be important for all of us:
- Will a patient respond to a particular medication?
- What is the risk of a flood disaster in a certain location within the next three days?
- What is the market potential of a certain product in a certain country?
- Which dress size will fit a particular customer best?
- What impact will a lockdown have on the number of infections within the next 2 months?
- and many more questions ...
Master's degree programmes
At the University of Regensburg, the M.Sc. degree program "Data Science" of the same name builds directly on the Bachelor's programme. In addition, our university offers a variety of other computer science-related Master's programmes. For example, you can go on to study computational science if you are particularly interested in data science in the natural sciences, or human-centred AI if you are fascinated by language processing or similar. Media and management information systems are also possible options. If you focussed on biomedical research topics in your Bachelor's degree, you can also continue with an M.Sc. degree in molecular medicine or biochemistry. A focus on economics also makes an M.Sc. degree programme in economics or business administration possible.
Structure of the Program
Bachelor of Science: In principle, only one subject is studied.
Program Structure
The B.Sc. Data Science at the University of Regensburg is divided into a compulsory and an elective courses in. The compulsory area can in turn be divided into a basic area and a specialisation area. The proportion of individual subject areas or learning objectives within these areas can be seen in the following diagram:
Exemplary study plan
The exemplary study plan (opens in a new window). (This PDF is not accessible)shows you which courses are scheduled in the individual semesters. "Exemplary" means that you can choose the courses in the constrained elective courses according to your own preferences.
Internship
On the Bachelor's degree programme in Data Science at the University of Regensburg, you have freedom of choice when it comes to internships: there are no compulsory internships as part of the degree programme. However, you can have a voluntary internship recognised in the constrained elective courses.
Regardless of whether you complete an internship or not, the degree program has a high practical component and prepares you for your career entry. Lectures are always accompanied by exercises and you will carry out a project independently as part of a team.
