The Master's programme is an advanced course of study in which scientific content and methods can be deepened and specialisations can be set. Requirements for this are the degree of an undergraduate Bachelor's programme or a comparable first professionally qualifying university degree. In addition, certain content is often specified as an aptitude requirement. The detailed provisions are set out in the respective Examination Regulations.
A completed Master's programme entitles the holder to a doctorate.

The Master's degree programme in Slavic languages and literature is aimed at anyone who would like to acquire in-depth knowledge of the Slavic languages, literatures and cultures of Eastern, Central and South Eastern Europe. Become an expert in the cultural diversity of Eastern, Central and South-Eastern Europe!

This Master's programme combines in-depth training in linguistics, literature and cultural studies with excellent language skills in two Slavic languages. A central component of the programme is the development of your transfer skills: you will learn to quickly familiarise yourself with new issues and to present your findings with confidence.

With this profile of specific expert knowledge and high intercultural skills, you will be ideally prepared for demanding jobs in business, media, culture or politics.

Program Profile

The Master's degree in Slavic languages and literature is aimed at graduates who wish to professionalise their expertise in the Slavic region. The programme opens up the entire cultural spectrum of Eastern, Central and South Eastern Europe to you. You define your individual profile through two central specialisations: You choose two languages from an exceptionally wide range of Slavic languages and at the same time specialise academically in the fields of literature, linguistics or cultural studies.

A special feature is the intensive language training at the highest level: you will take your first chosen language up to the UNIcert® III certificate and the second language up to UNIcert® II. At the same time, you will train your transfer competence by crossing national borders in your thinking and analysing topics in a broad international context. Independent project management and critical study of sources are an integral part of your training.
With this profile of excellent language skills, specific specialist knowledge and a high level of intercultural competence, you will be ideally prepared - whether for an academic career or for a career in international organisations, in cultural management or in the globally networked economy.

Structure of the Program

Program Structure

The Master's degree programme in Slavic languages and literature (120 CP) has a modular structure and combines an academic specialisation with intensive language practice. The programme is based on three central pillars, which allow you maximum freedom of choice and individual profile development: academic specialisation, Intensive language training and Research and mentoring.

The duration of the programme depends on the individual course of study. The Standard Period of Study, i.e. the time in which the intended study programme can ideally be completed, is 4 semesters. The actual duration of the programme may differ from this. It is limited by the examination deadlines, which are regulated in the Examination Regulations.

Details Requirements

Eligibility Test / Aptitude Test

In order to be admitted to the Master's degree programme in Slavic languages and literature, you will undergo a so-called Eligibility Test. We will check whether you have the academic and personal requirements for the programme.

1. Specialised degree
You need a first professionally qualifying university degree (usually a Bachelor's degree) with an overall grade of "good" or better. Ideally, your degree should be in one of the following fields:

  • Slavic languages and literature: Bachelor's degree with a Slavic subject as your first or second major.
  • East European Studies: Bachelor's degree in a degree program with an East European focus, provided you have previous knowledge of a Slavic language.
  • Philologies: Bachelor's degree in another philological degree program, provided you have prior knowledge of a Slavic language.

2. Application documents
To apply for the Eligibility Test, please submit the following documents:

  • Curriculum vitae in tabular form
  • Letter of motivation (outlining your academic interests and goals)
  • Bachelor's degree certificate or a current transcript of records, if the certificate is not yet available at the time of application. (You will submit the final certificate at the time of enrolment).

3. Application deadlines
Please submit your documents by the deadline for the desired starting semester:

  • For the start in the winter semester: by 15 June
  • For the start in the summer semester: by 15 January
