Course: Physics - Teaching degree Realschule

  • Physics

The Bavarian teacher training programme is divided into an academic course of study at the university, which ends with the first state examination, and a two-year traineeship, which concludes with the second state examination. The university study programme for a teaching degree at secondary schools consists of

  • two teaching subjects,
  • the education degree programme and
  • the Internships.

The teaching degree programme in Physics at Realschulen is divided into a subject-specific and a didactics component. The subject-specific training imparts knowledge in the areas of experimental physics and the structure of matter. In terms of content, experimental physics focuses on the four fundamental areas of mechanics, electrodynamics, waves and quanta as well as thermodynamics. School content is taken up and deepened. The structure of matter describes the structure of atoms and molecules.

In the physics didactics courses, you will learn the basics for successful physics lessons, practise using experiments effectively and receive guidance on how to successfully combine learning content with experimentation. You will design physics lessons together with experienced lecturers and reflect on them. You will also receive suggestions for creative physics lessons in specially designed modules.

Program Profile

Is this the right program for me?

Teaching degree students in physics often report the following reasons for their choice of study programme:

  • I want to get students excited about physicists
  • I would like to work with young people
  • I am enthusiastic about the subject of physics
  • I want to develop personally and learn something
  • I am looking forward to being able to practise my profession as a teacher

If some of these motivations also apply to you, the physics teaching degree program could be a good fit for you.

Here you will find some self-exploration questionnaires to help you make your decision:

What can I do with this degree?

During your studies, you will acquire basic didactic knowledge, which you can deepen in a doctorate in physics didactics after your first State Examination.

When studying didactics, you will learn how to prepare complex subject content in such a way that it is clear and understandable while remaining technically correct and thus supporting subsequent learning rather than making it more difficult. In addition, the motivating, respectful and appealing design of teaching materials plays an important role. This opens up the possibility of working in the relevant media industry (publishing houses, radio and television stations, etc.) in addition to teaching.

“What I particularly like about the degree programme is that you immerse yourself in university maths and physics, but without going too deep. This is complemented by didactics in both subjects, education and internships - so the specialised science is combined with everyday school life. For me, it's a good mix of professional challenge, practical relevance and personal development.”

Jana Pschorn, secondary school teacher, 6th semester

Structure of the Program

Program Structure

In the secondary school teaching degree programme, you will study two teaching subjects and education (school education, general pedagogy and educational psychology). Through various internships during your studies, you will learn how to apply your theoretical knowledge in everyday school life.

At the University of Regensburg, you can combine the teaching degree in Physics with:

  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • German
  • Music
