DFG bewilligt Kolleg-Forschergruppe
"Jenseits des Kanons: Heterotopien religiöser Autorität im spätantiken Christentum"

The biblical writings of the Old and New Testaments are regarded in Christianity as a canon of foundational authority. However, there also exist other texts that either challenge canonical writings or continue them—while likewise claiming authority. The research group focuses on these traditions and their functions in a wide range of contexts of religious life—above all in literature, but also in material culture and liturgy. The project is the DFG Research Unit “Beyond the Canon: Heterotopias of Religious Authority in Late Antique Christianity,” which was proposed by the Regensburg professors Tobias Nicklas (principal investigator), Andreas Merkt, and Harald Buchinger, and approved on 14 December 2017. By examining non-canonical Christian traditions, the researchers aim to gain new insights into socio-cultural, religious, and theological-historical phenomena of Late Antiquity and Late Antique Christianity.
