Harald Buchinger, born in 1969; studied sacred music at the Vienna Diocesan Conservatory (C-level church musician in 1984, B-level church musician in 1986) and theology at the University of Vienna (Mag. theol. in 1995) and in Jerusalem (ecumenical study year at Dormition Abbey in 1990/91). After earning his doctorate with ‘sub auspiciis praesidentis rei publicae’ in 2002 at the University of Vienna, a research and study stay in Rome from 2004 to 2007 funded by the FWF, and his habilitation in 2006 at the University of Vienna, he has been Professor of Liturgical Studies at the University of Regensburg since 2008. 2012–13 Senior Research Fellow and Visiting Professor at Yale University; guest lecturer at the Theological Study Year in Jerusalem at Dormition Abbey. Research Dean, Associate Dean, and three-time Dean of the Faculty of Catholic Theology, as well as Senator of the University of Regensburg. Principal Investigator of the Research Training Group “Metropolitanism in the Pre-Modern Era” (DFG-GRK 2337) and Deputy Spokesperson of the Research Group/Centre for Advanced Studies “Beyond Canon” (DFG-FOR 2770); since 2024 a member of the DFG Review Board Theology, and since 2025 President of the Societas Liturgica.
His research includes liturgy in patristics, liturgical use of the Bible, Jewish liturgy, Jerusalem liturgy and its reception, festivals (especially the Easter celebration), processions and their chants, and music in worship (especially Gregorian chant).
