Chemistry preliminary course
Option A
Biochemistry students can take part in the preliminary chemistry course for biology students .
Participation in this course is voluntary, but is strongly recommended.
The course is supervised by students from higher semesters who are themselves studying either chemistry or a teaching degree in biology/chemistry.
Contents
The preliminary course is primarily intended to prepare students for the lecture General Chemistry in the first semester, but is also useful as a basis for the lectures Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry in the following semesters.
Example topics:
-Atom, periodic table and chemical bonds
-Molecular structures
-Electron transitions: redox reactions
-Proton transitions: acid-base reactions
Information on the contents of the preliminary course can be found in GRIPS - link (external link, opens in a new window)
Period and registration
22. until 26 Sept. 2025
You can participate either in the morning or afternoon.
Groups are offered from 8 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 5 pm.
You can choose your preferred group when you register.
You must register for a group in SPUR by 28 September 2025 (link) (external link, opens in a new window) (external link, opens in a new window)
Registration in SPUR (student portal of the University of Regensburg) is only possible after enrolment. To log in, you will need your CC account, which consists of three letters and five numbers (for example: vip12345), which you received when you enrolled.
Students who are not yet enrolled should contact elisabeth.brunner@ur.de
If you were unable to register for the preliminary course in time, you can still attend the course at any time during the course without registering. You will find the rooms in SPUR.
Contact: Study programme coordinator elisabeth.brunner(at)ur.de (opens your email program)
Option B
Alternatively, biochemistry students also have the opportunity to take part in the chemistry preliminary course for BSc chemistry students. The capacity of the course is limited.
The main purpose of the pre-course is to review and summarise important aspects of 8th-10th grade school material and is primarily aimed at first-semester students who have had little or no chemistry lessons. The focus is on concepts and learning aids. It is intended to provide concrete preparation for the start of the first semester. It is a voluntary course and is not a prerequisite for the first semester courses.
Dates: 1.-4 September 2025 from 09:00-16:00
Room: H46 (lecture theatre 46 in the chemistry building)
Lecturer: Dr Victoria Telser (Academic Councillor of Chemistry Education)
Registration takes place via the following link until 26.08.2025: https://s2survey.net/anmeldungvorkurs25/. (external link, opens in a new window)
You are also welcome to leave comments here. If you have any questions , please contact Dr Victoria Telser(victoria.telser(at)ur.de) (opens your email program). You will receive a confirmation email at the end of the registration phase.
The preliminary course takes place exclusively in presence. The course is free of charge. You can also take part if your enrolment has not yet been completed.
It is recommended that you attend the entire course. A certificate of attendance can be issued for complete participation.
Expected contents:
- Mixtures and pure substances, dealing with the periodic table, atomic models, compound types, chemical formula (molecular formula),
- chemical formula (ratio formula), chemical reaction, valence bar formulae
- Electron transitions, oxidation numbers, redox equations
- Selected quantitative aspects of chemical reactions, acids and bases, acidic and basic solutions, protolysis, ampholytes, indicators, pH value, pKs value
Pre-course in mathematics
Extensive knowledge of mathematicians is required to study biochemistry, which is acquired in the first semester in the mathematics lecture. This builds on a solid knowledge of basic mathematics (school level).
To make it easier for you to get started, the Faculty of Mathematics is once again offering a preliminary course on basic mathematics before the start of the winter semester, probably from 30 September to 7 October 2025. The aim of the preliminary course is to review and align previous school knowledge and thus provide the mathematical tools that are required in the mathematics lectures.
The course takes place in groups led by tutors. The mathematics basics are briefly repeated and consolidated by means of many exercises. Participation in the preliminary course is not compulsory, but is strongly recommended.
Dates of the preliminary course: 30.09., 1.10., 2.10., 6.10., 7.10.: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. (all day)
Enrolment: Via the G.R.I.P.S.(Joint Regensburg Internet Platform
for students):
https://elearning.uni-regensburg.de/course/view.php?id=71618 (external link, opens in a new window)
You can activate your G.R.I.P.S. account as soon as you have your NDS ID. Under G.R.I.P.S. you will also find materials and further information on the preliminary course (in particular on the exact timetable, group allocation and rooms).
The registration deadline is 26.09.2025. Please register early.
If you have any questions, please contact me by e-mail (mihaela.pilca@ur.de).

Student council (for) Biology & Biochemistry
The Biology & Biochemistry student council is made up of committed and partly elected students from the Biology, Biochemistry and Teaching Biology degree programmes. They represent the interests of all students in the faculty and are an important point of contact for questions, concerns or problems relating to studying.
At the start of studies, the student council (for) Biology & Biochemistry invites all first-semester students to an Introductory Events for New Students. There you will receive helpful information about starting your degree programme and get to know your fellow students.
Current dates and further information can be found here: (https://www.fs-biologie.de/) (external link, opens in a new window)!
Course catalogues (SPUR), GRIPS, Flexnow
Registration in SPUR, G.R.I.P.S. and Flexnow is possible after enrolment with your CC account (e.g.: vip12345).
Course catalogues (SPUR)
- You can access the course catalogues via our campus portal SPUR
- The course catalog lists all courses by degree programme and semester (Bachelor of Science -> Biochemistry)
All current information on a course can be found there.
G.R.I.P.S. = e-learning platform of the University of Regensburg
- Documents relating to the courses, e.g. lecture notes, lecture slides, videos of lectures etc. are uploaded to GRIPS.
To do this, students must enrol in the relevant course in G.R.I.P.S.
Flexnow = electronic examination administration system
- Flexnow is used to register for all written exams (final module exams) and coursework.
- Participation in a module examination (written exam) is only possible by registering in Flexnow.
- The registration deadline for written exams is five working days before the exam!
- If you have problems registering for a written exam, please contact the member of the teaching staff, the Biology/Biochemistry Examinations Office or the degree program coordinator before the exam.
- Registration for a written exam is checked before or during the exam, or must be confirmed by the student on a cover sheet with a signature.
- Students can access the documentation of their own examination results in Flexnow at any time.
