The Master's programme is an advanced course of study in which scientific content and methods can be deepened and specialisations can be set. Requirements for this are the degree of an undergraduate Bachelor's programme or a comparable first professionally qualifying university degree. In addition, certain content is often specified as an aptitude requirement. The detailed provisions are set out in the respective Examination Regulations. Completion of a Master's degree programme entitles the holder to a doctorate.

The aim of the degree program is to teach advanced methods of media informatics. The Master's programme focuses on the scientific profile of Regensburg media informatics

  • Usability Engineering,
  • Interaction techniques and technologies,
  • as well as interactive information and assistance systems.

Program Profile

Is this the right program for me?

Is this right program for you if you have a bachelor's degree in media informatics, information science, computer science or similar and are interested in developing modern user-centred software and interaction technologies as well as working in research in areas of media informatics such as human-machine interaction.

You should enjoy working in a team, solving complex challenges, communicating with users and stakeholders and have an interest in research.

The Master's programme consists primarily of project-focused courses in which you will work independently in a team, carry out programming and conduct empirical studies.

What makes this program special?

The Master of Science in Media Informatics is characterised above all by a focus on very practice-oriented courses. Written exams are rare. Working in teams, you will conduct empirical studies in the field of human-computer interaction and modern interaction technologies or develop advanced systems and applications using advanced software and usability engineering techniques.

Programming and empirical work (study implementation, experiment design, statistics) are essential components of the programme.

In the project courses and constrained elective modules, you can set your own focus according to your own interests.

Structure of the Program

Program Structure

The Master of Science in Media Informatics is a consecutive in-depth degree program that builds on the Bachelor of Arts in Media Informatics.

The focus of the degree program is on teaching research-oriented work in media informatics. Central topics are the development and evaluation of modern interaction technologies, advanced software and usability engineering as well as human-computer interaction.

In constrained elective modules, students can specialise in areas such as game engineering and digital humanities.

From winter semester 2025/26, first-year students of the M.Sc. in Media Informatics can choose between studying Full-time or Part-time . It is possible to switch between the two types of study programme.

The Master's degree programme in Media Informatics (from winter semester 2026/27) is divided into

  • a core area with four compulsory modules (incl. Master's thesis) totalling 72 ECTS and
  • an elective area with at least 48 ECTS credits. In the elective B area, you can choose freely from a total of 12 modules.

Internationalization

There is no compulsory semester abroad on the Master's degree programme in Media Informatics, but the Chair of Media Informatics will be happy to support you in your search and in the recognition of credits earned abroad.

Internship

A compulsory Internship is not part of the degree program. Students are recommended to take advantage of internships and job offers in the region at their own discretion.
