Men and Masculinities (Mathias Winkler)

I am interested in conceptions of masculinity in the Old Testament and its context. Conceptions of masculinity are socio-cultural gender scripts that men must conform to if they wish to be regarded as men in the eyes of other men and society. These conceptions of masculinity must constantly be re-established and proven in the eyes of others. I am examining these various conceptions of masculinity in the Old Testament. My aim is not merely to describe these different conceptions, but also to trace the discourses surrounding masculinity. How are these conceptions of masculinity portrayed, and to what end is this done?
In particular, I ask how sexual and sexualised violence against men is described in the Bible and what effect this is intended to have on readers. I am also interested in how and for what purpose stories are told about women who perform male gender scripts.
