The Ancestors’ Encounters with God
God reveals Himself to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob through visions, divine messengers and dreams. The choice of a particular mode of revelation and designation of God is not insignificant, but rather reveals to the reader, in different ways, the theological uniqueness of the Patriarchs. Crucial to this is the literary portrayal of the act of seeing, although what is seen is hardly the central focus. Apparitions, messengers of God and dreams each show the reader in a different way what it can mean to see God without actually seeing him.
