Guidelines on the Use of Artificial Intelligence for Members of the University of Regensburg

This guideline relates to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the context of research, studies, teaching, outreach and university management at the University of Regensburg. Information and regulations on the current EU regulation on AI ("AI Act") can be found here (external link, opens in a new window).

AI is changing the way we learn, teach, research and work. In a short space of time, AI-supported applications such as ChatGPT, DeepL and image generators have found their ways into everyday study and work life. Students, lecturers and staff are faced with the challenge of dealing with these new technologies responsibly and competently.

The aim of this guide is to provide orientation:

  • Where and how can AI be used sensibly?
  • What is permitted, what should be critically considered - and where are the clear limits?
  • The guide aims to encourage the competent, creative and responsible use of AI. At the same time, the aim is to raise awareness of the legal, ethical and university-related framework conditions and to sensitive people to the fact that the use of AI brings with it both new opportunities and new challenges.

This guide is aimed at all members of the University of Regensburg:

  • to students who would like to use AI to support their learning, as writing support or for organising,
  • teachers who want to use AI tools in their teaching,
  • researchers who want to use AI in research and science communication
  • as well as all other employees in the university context who want to use AI tools to tap into new potential for communication and other tasks in everyday working life.

3. Use cases

The specific use of AI varies widely depending on the role, area of responsibility and context within the University of Regensburg. The following recommendations are therefore based on typical use cases and target groups - from research and teaching to administration and studies. They offer practical advice on what is permitted, what to look out for and for the clear boundaries.

The target groups thus receive reliable guidance for the responsible and compliant use of generative AI in the respective work or learning context.
