Prof. Dr. Rainer Spang

My research focuses on machine learning methods that help us understand the biology of tumors.

I earned my Ph.D. at the German Cancer Center (DKFZ) in the group of Martin Vingron, was a postdoc at Duke University before I moved to Berlin to lead the Computational Diagnostics Group at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Genetics. Since 2006 I am professor of Statistical Bioinformatics at the University of Regensburg. My lab bridges statistical method development and applied data science in oncology. We develop statistical methods that extract insights from data and develop tools that we and others employ in cancer research. With our tools we study the biology of tumors from their genomic dynamics and molecular mechanisms, via the systems biology of tumor tissue organization including immune infiltration, to treatment decisions, and personalized medicine.
