Horkovics-Kováts Gabriel, M.Sc. Electrical Engineering

My name is Gabriel Stefan Horkovics-Kováts. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. I completed my PhD in Analytical Chemistry at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest, and I am currently finalizing the submission of my dissertation alongside my work at the University of Regensburg in the Department of Immunomedicine under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Takáts.

My research expertise focuses on ambient ionization techniques and mass spectrometry-based imaging applications, particularly Desorption Electrospray Ionization (DESI) and Rapid Evaporative Ionization Mass Spectrometry (REIMS).

 

A major focus of my current work at the Department of Immunomedicine is the integration and clinical implementation of the REIMS-based “iKnife” technology within surgical departments of the Universtiy Hospital of Regensburg. This endeavour combines analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, and surgical applications to establish real-time intraoperative tissue characterization workflows. The iKnife technology utilizes electrosurgically generated surgical smoke as an analytical source, allowing immediate mass spectrometric profiling and differentiation of tissue types based on their molecular composition. We have successfully established this technology in two surgical departments at the University Hospital Regensburg and are further developing its applications for research and future clinical translation.
