Overview of the project phases

1. Phase: Study preparation & piloting

In the first phase of the project, the investigation of the central research questions will be prepared with a view to three independent work objectives:

  • The data obtained in the previous FALKO project will be reanalysed and, based on this, the domain-specific professional knowledge tests for teachers will be optimised.
  • Based on the current state of research, generic and subject-specific dimensions of teaching quality will be theoretically identified and conceptually further developed. This forms the basis for the conception and domain-specific operationalisation of the methodological approaches with which teaching quality is to be empirically measured from different perspectives (student questionnaires, criteria-based evaluation of teaching videos, analyses of teaching and learning materials).
  • Finally, the construction and piloting of curricularly valid tests for pupils' learning success is required.

2. Phase: Main survey

During implementation, the participating teachers and classes are scientifically monitored for an entire school year and the procedures mentioned in phase 1 are used at predefined points in time. In addition to teacher and pupil context variables, the teachers' professional knowledge, the quality of teaching using the digital questionnaire, short video recordings and teaching/learning materials as well as the pupils' performance are recorded in the six subjects.

3. Phase: Evaluation & publication

In the third phase of the project, the generated research data will be systematically processed, comprehensively documented and analysed in accordance with the research questions. The results are disseminated in national and international publications with scientific quality assurance and their relevance and implications for practice are discussed.

Work will also begin on developing an information platform on the topic of teaching quality, which is aimed at interested student teachers, trainee teachers, teachers and all those involved in teacher training, further training and in-service training.
The findings gained during the design and piloting of a digital questionnaire to record the quality of teaching from the pupils' perspective will be directly incorporated into the development of an app for evaluating one's own teaching.
