LL.B. in Digital Law

About the degree programme

Digitalisation is the most significant megatrend of the early 21st century. Its impact is also evident in the labour market: with around 1 million employees, the IT sector is now the second-largest industrial employer in Germany. It is also set to transform the legal sector. In recent years, the term ‘Legal Tech’ has come to denote a highly innovative, scientific and technical field of research that aims to analyse and harness the potential of digitalisation in the legal sector.

The Bachelor’s degree programme, which has been offered at the University of Regensburg since the 2021/22 winter semester, is even broader in scope, focusing on the subject area of ‘Digital Law’. These technological changes are accompanied by significant societal transformation processes that raise a host of legal issues – in Germany, the European Union and, ultimately, worldwide. For example, fundamental questions arise regarding the legitimacy and legal validity of algorithm-based decisions, the oversight of such decisions, and a shift in the balance of power from the state to private companies, coupled with the risk of discrimination on the grounds of origin, age and gender.

Target audience

The LL.B. in Digital Law is aimed at students with an interest in both law and technology. The programme is an excellent alternative to a traditional law degree, as it provides knowledge of civil and public law but does not lead to the state examination. Those who have successfully completed both the LL.B. in Digital Law and the state examination programme have excellent career prospects. Such a dual degree programme is possible. Prior knowledge of computer science is an advantage, but not a prerequisite. The aim is not to turn students into computer scientists. The aim is to improve their ability to engage in dialogue when graduates later have to work together in an interdisciplinary manner and apply technical knowledge in legal processes.
