Studying from A to Z

Acknowledgements

Through credit transfer, students can have work completed outside the UR recognised. Recognised work is recorded in Flex Now as exams passed. You will then no longer need to take the recognised course elsewhere.

In the Master’s programme in Criminology and Violence Research, credits from other degree programmes or universities can generally be recognised for the following reasons:

  • Recognition of credits from a previous Bachelor’s degree
  • Recognition of credits from a semester spent abroad
  • Recognition of a Master’s thesis from another Master’s programme (concurrent study)

IMPORTANT

Deadlines apply to all applications for credit transfer!

Credits can only be recognised following prior consultation with the programme coordinator before the work is completed. (Recognition of credits from a Bachelor’s programme is exempt from this.)

First-year students are informed about recognition options during the introductory session. Individual advice is only available to enrolled students once lectures have begun.

Course registration procedures and allocation of places

As the Master’s programme is interdisciplinary in nature and involves several faculties, the course allocation procedure and enrolment process may vary depending on the teaching unit offering the course. In general, the following applies:

SPUR: Placement procedure

FlexNow: Exam registration

G.R.I.P.S.: E-learning platform

For courses organised and supervised by LS Müller, the following applies: Registration takes place directly in FlexNow! There is no prior course registration via SPUR. You can find registration deadlines in the information provided in SPUR and in the PDFs accompanying the course catalogue.

For large lectures, registration via SPUR is often not required either.

Semester abroad

In most cases, a voluntary semester abroad takes place in the third semester of the degree programme. You will find useful information on organising a semester abroad in this leaflet (external link, opens in a new window).

Finding a supervisor for your final year project

You should allow several weeks to find a supervisor for your final dissertation. Students usually look for a supervisor during the semester break before the semester in which they will write their Master’s thesis. In principle, all professors and postdoctoral researchers at German universities are authorised to supervise a thesis for the MA in Criminology.

  • You will need one supervisor (a second supervisor is required only in exceptional cases).
  • If you find a supervisor from outside the UR, you must apply for their appointment as an examiner. This is often a mere formality provided your supervisor meets the formal criteria.
  • You can find further detailed information on the Master’s thesis in our information sheet.

How to go about your search:

You are responsible for finding a supervisor yourself. Generally, you will follow one of two approaches: Either you develop a topic and a (rough) outline for your Master’s thesis and approach suitable lecturers with this, or you contact your preferred department/chair or lecturers and enquire whether any suitable topics are currently available. It is also helpful to indicate a broad thematic direction here. The more common approach is to develop a topic yourself.

Furthermore, when making enquiries, you should specify the following: in which semester you would like to write your Master’s thesis and, where applicable, to what extent you are flexible regarding the choice of topic and the timeline.

Dual Research Module (independent)

The dual research module is scheduled for the third academic semester. To this end, the Chair of Criminal Law and Criminology always offers group-based research modules during the winter semester. The research module may also be undertaken independently.

Important information regarding an independently organised research module can be found here (external link, opens in a new window).

Flexnow

Flexnow is (external link, opens in a new window)the University of Regensburg’s examination management system. This is where you can register for (or withdraw from) examinations, and where all results are recorded.
Registration is required not only for written examinations, but for all course components, including seminars, tutorials, etc.
You can view your own examination results and academic progress here at any time.

If you have any questions or require clarification regarding FlexNow, please contact our secretary, Ms Datz-Dittmer, or the programme co-ordination office.

As a general rule, Prof. Dr Müller’s department is responsible for the following FlexNow registrations and mark entries:

- All courses taught by members of our department

- RVL Society

- All research modules (except those taught by Prof. von Treskow)

- As a rule, Forensic Psychiatry

- Courses taught by Dr Gietl

For courses run by the Chair of Business Administration (Prof. Steger), you will receive a certificate which you must submit to the Examination Office for the Humanities together with a registration form. You can find the registration form on the Examination Office’s website.

All other courses should be created and managed in FlexNow by the departments offering the respective course. In such cases, please enquire directly with them.

You may also include courses you have taken on a voluntary basis in FlexNow as additional examination achievements, provided you have also completed the relevant required assessment (e.g. written exam, presentation, term paper). If you are attending courses purely as an auditor, please always ask the relevant lecturer whether you can obtain an attendance certificate. You can then include this certificate with your application documents if necessary; it is not possible to register this in FlexNow.

For some of your modules, you will receive marks that are not included in the module mark. Please note that these marks will nevertheless appear on your transcript and in ToR. It is not possible to hide these marks.

G.R.I.P.S.

G.R.I.P.S. (external link, opens in a new window) stands for ‘Joint RegensburgInternet Platformfor Students’and is an e-learning platform. You can also register to take part in seminars or tutorials via G.R.I.P.S. G.R.I.P.S. also contains further information, course materials and recommended reading for the individual modules.

Illness on the day of the exam

If you are unable to sit an examination as planned due to illness, you must submit a medical certificate and a notice of withdrawal on grounds of illness to the relevant examination office by the day of the examination at the latest. Please also remember to inform the examination organiser!

You can find the application form and information sheet for withdrawing from the UR due to illness here.

Master's thesis

You can find all the key information about the Master’s thesis here (external link, opens in a new window).

If you are studying for a second Master’s degree at the same time, you have the option, subject to certain conditions, of having your Master’s thesis from that programme recognised within the Master’s programme in Criminology and Violence Research.

To this end, you should have a non-binding preliminary assessment carried out to check the suitability of the content when you begin planning your Master’s thesis. Please contact the programme coordinator for this.

Even if the Master’s thesis from another degree programme can be recognised, you must attend the Master’s seminar at the Chair of Criminal Law and Criminology as required.

Master’s seminar

The Master’s seminar is the supporting seminar for your Master’s thesis. You do not need to have registered your thesis yet to take part in the Master’s seminar. However, you should attend the seminar in the semester in which you plan to write your Master’s thesis.

Further information about the course will usually be provided by the relevant lecturers via GRIPS once you have registered for it.

All students on the MA in Criminology and Violence Research must attend the Master’s seminar! This applies even if you are seeking recognition of your Master’s thesis from another Master’s programme (see the entry ‘Master’s thesis’).

Withdrawal from courses

According to the Study Regulations, you have the option of withdrawing from the examination up to two working days before the examination date without giving a reason. To do so, please contact the relevant person for the course in question. As a general rule, once the registration and withdrawal deadlines have passed, you should always inform the lecturer if you are withdrawing, so that they can plan more effectively and, where necessary, allocate any remaining places (particularly in seminars), even if it is still early in the semester.

TRACK

SPUR is the University of Regensburg’s course catalogue and course management system. Here you will find the current course catalogue; you can also use SPUR to enrol in and withdraw from courses within the relevant deadlines (please note that enrolment procedures vary from course to course). You do not usually need to register for lectures.

Additional examination area

Under the module code KRIM-ZP (Additional Examination Area), you can sit optional examinations whilst studying criminology. You can usually see in SPUR/FlexNow which modules are also available for the ZP area. If you wish to attend modules outside your timetable and have them credited under KRIM-ZP, always speak to the programme co-ordinator beforehand!

Enrolment under KRIM-ZP is subject to the following conditions:

  • You must receive ECTS credits for the work completed.
  • Double enrolment is not permitted. The examination you wish to sit may only be registered under KRIM-ZP.

The following is not permitted:

  • An examination that you have taken for a subject area requiring recognition, e.g. in a second degree subject or in a supplementary programme, cannot be registered under KRIM-ZP. (Duplicate registrations are prohibited)
  • Attendance certificates or certificates of participation for various courses cannot be recorded under KRIM-ZP, as you have not earned any ECTS credits for them.
  • An examination result recorded under KRIM-ZP cannot be transferred to an area requiring recognition, e.g. for specialisation modules.

ZSK certificates

In consultation with the Programme Assistant (PA), certificates from the ZSK may be recorded under KRIM-ZP even without a formal application. Please send a scan of your certificate, stating your name and student number, to the relevant PA with the following note:

I hereby confirm that I will not submit the attached certificate for registration in any other degree programme other than the M.A. in Criminology and Violence Research.
