Course: Physics - Teaching degree Gymnasium

  • Physics

The Bavarian teacher training programme is divided into an academic course of study at the university, which ends with the first state examination, and a two-year traineeship, which concludes with the second state examination. The university degree programme for a teaching degree at grammar schools consists of

  • two teaching subjects
  • the education degree programme and
  • the Internships.

The teaching degree programme in physics for grammar schools is divided into an in-depth subject-specific and a didactics component. The specialised science course provides in-depth knowledge in the areas of experimental physics and the structure of matter as well as basic knowledge of theoretical physics. In terms of content, experimental physics focuses on the four fundamental sub-areas of mechanics, electrodynamics, waves and quanta as well as thermodynamics. School content is taken up and deepened. The structure of matter describes the structure of atoms and molecules. Theoretical physics addresses aspects of classical mechanics, electrodynamics and quantum mechanics.

In the physics didactics courses, you will learn the basics of successful physics teaching, practise using experiments effectively and receive guidance on how to successfully combine learning content with experimentation. You will design physics lessons together with experienced lecturers and reflect on them. You will also receive suggestions for creative physics lessons in specially designed modules.

Program Profile

Is this the right program for me?

Teaching degree students in physics often report the following reasons for their choice of study programme:

  • I want to get students excited about physicists
  • I would like to work with young people
  • I am enthusiastic about the subject of physics
  • I want to develop personally and learn something
  • I am already looking forward to working as a teacher

If you can find yourself in any of these motivations, the degree program Physics Teaching Degree Gymnasium could be a good fit for you.

Here you will find some self-exploration questionnaires to help you make your decision:

What can I do with this degree?

During your studies, you will acquire in-depth subject knowledge as well as basic didactic knowledge, and a doctorate in both physics and didactics of physics is possible after the first State Examination.

In didactics studies, you learn to prepare complex subject content in such a way that it becomes clear and understandable while remaining technically correct and thus supporting subsequent learning rather than making it more difficult. In addition, the motivating, respectful and appealing design of teaching materials plays an important role. This opens up the possibility of working in many areas of the free economy (publishing houses, radio and television stations, etc., physics-related professions) in addition to teaching.

“What I like best is the great team spirit among the students. Working on tasks together, but also the general togetherness, are the main components of my degree programme.”

Anna Kaminski, grammar school teacher, 7th semester

“Even though the start of my studies and the new environment were completely overwhelming at first, everything turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable time, especially thanks to new acquaintances. The most difficult part is usually only at the beginning, for which you need a bit of stamina.”

Christian Eder, Gymynasiallehramt , 9th semester

“What I like most about my degree programme is the internships, which give me a real-life insight into my future career. But I also enjoy and am enthusiastic about the specialist lectures and working on tasks together. Cohesion and teamwork are very important in my degree program.”

Sophia Krottenthaler, grammar school teaching degree, 7th semester

Structure of the Program

Program Structure

When studying for a teaching degree at a grammar school, you will study two subjects and education (school education, general pedagogy and psychology). Through various internships during your studies, you will learn how to apply your theoretical knowledge in everyday school life.

At the University of Regensburg, you can combine the teaching degree in Physics with:

  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
