Brief description of the project
What is the goal? Since 2024, the University of Regensburg has awarded an annual sustainability prize to recognise commitment and progress towards greater sustainability, make it visible and support exemplary initiatives and projects. The prize is awarded by the Executive Board of the UR.
Who is honoured? On the one hand, prizes can be awarded for projects, measures or achievements that have already been completed, but also for specific ideas and projects that are to be implemented in the future. In both cases, the prize money is to be used for measures in line with the "Sustainability Strategy 2023 - 2027". The funds are spent via the Green Office, which reports to the university's "Sustainability Council for the Future" at least once a year on the projects implemented.
How much? The Sustainability Award is endowed with € 5,000.00.
Who can apply? Any member of the UR can apply. Several members within an association, accredited initiatives, and organizational units may also apply. Self-nominations are expressly permitted and encouraged. Award winners may also be nominated by others.
Award ceremony: The award ceremony will take place during a festive event in November 2026.
Background: At the University of Regensburg, sustainability in the sense of our "Sustainability Strategy 2023-2027" (external link, opens in a new window) is an important concern and cross-cutting issue that affects all university fields of action (research, teaching, (student) engagement, campus operations, digitalisation, transfer, and governance) and takes into account all seventeen sustainability goals (external link, opens in a new window) of the United Nations.

It was with great pleasure that the Sustainability Award 2025 was presented to the student project "CampusCar - Commuting together, changing together (external link, opens in a new window)" by Moritz Schmid and Felix Ipfling. They impressed the jury with their concept of a smart, app-based car-sharing platform called "CampusCar", which is specially designed for commuting on the Regensburg campus. Their concept is based on the fact that many students and employees reach the University of Regensburg alone by car - often due to limited or no public transport alternatives, particularly in the surrounding area. The aim of the app is to encourage more UR members to commute together more often. The prize money will support the winners in the further development of their concept.
The Sustainability Network wins the Sustainability Award 2024
The Sustainability Network (external link, opens in a new window) has been organising the annual Regensburg Sustainability Week since 2019 and offers workshops on topics such as the climate crisis, health and the energy transition. One milestone is the "Meeting Place for Sustainability" (Bauwagen Julia) on campus, which serves as a central place for dialogue. Supported by Dr Martin Postner, the network provides important impetus for a sustainable transformation on campus and beyond.
The Sustainability Network was also involved in the founding of our Green Office and in many of our campaigns - we look forward to further collaboration and more (joint) exciting projects in the future, congratulations from us!
