Doctoral project

Title of the dissertation
French life in the Regensburg camp in the light of the prisoners' newspaper "Le Pour et le Contre" (1916/17)

Project description
The dissertation focuses on the cultural activities of French prisoners of war during the First World War in the Regensburg main camp on Unterer Wöhrd. It examines various forms of cultural life in the camp, including music, theatre, sport and, in particular, the camp newspaper Le Pour et le Contre.

A particular focus is placed on the debates conducted in the newspaper on contemporary issues, especially the question of the position of religion in France.

The analysis incorporates findings from various disciplines - from military history and hearing sciences to theatre studies and catholic theology - but remains anchored in its cultural studies perspective. The focus is on the question of meaning and values as well as identity negotiations of the soldiers far from the front and their homeland - and yet "in the middle of the war".
