Error culture as a driver for learning

“You learn from your mistakes,” as the saying goes. But when do mistakes actually help students learn? And when are they more likely to get in the way?

In this blog post, we show that mistakes only become opportunities for learning when students feel safe. Fear and shame not only make students less likely to participate but can also interfere with learning itself.

This is why it is so important for lecturers to create a positive culture around mistakes and foster a sense of psychological safety. In such an environment, mistakes can become valuable sources of insight. To show what this can look like in practice, we present a specific learning activity in detail.
