On June 27, 2026, Ms. Zahra Mammadova (University of Brno) delivered a lecture at the Professorship for Transregional Cultures of Knowledge titled “Horizontal Art Histories: Fragments of Art and Curatorial Practice in Azerbaijan (1990s–2010)” (external link, opens in a new window) on developments in Azerbaijani art since the late 1980s.
Drawing on her research into visual materials, the journals of art collectives, and interviews with prominent artists, Mammadova explored how Azerbaijani artists turned from the proscribed Soviet-era framework of socialist realism toward engagement with religious transitions, ecology, and gender. In her talk, Mammadova explained how traditional art in Azerbaijan had historically focused on geometric figures and folkloric themes.
An interview with her (in English), conducted by Dr. Gözde Yazıcı Cörüt, is available here: Zahra Mammadova in Conversation with Gözde Yazıcı Cörüt - Universität Regensburg (external link, opens in a new window)
